UPDATE: Wudang Workshop Weekend 2010/03/21

Tue 16 Feb 2010

As a Holy Land of Taoism and a cradle of Wudang martial art, Wudang Mountains have a long history over 2000 years. At the end of Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368) and the beginning of Ming Dynasty(1368-1644), Wudang Taoist Zhang Sanfeng integrated the main achievements of Wudang Boxing and created the Wudang inner Boxing, which made him the respectful founder of Wudang Martial Art. The martial art of Wudang has been once unknown to the outside for fairly a long time due to the tradition of Taoism of instructing privately.

Kung-Fu Sweden is pleased to announce that there will be a weekend workshop on March 20-21, exploring the traditions of Wudang:

WUDANG ESSENCES

Kung-Fu Sweden Headquarters, Malmoe, March 20 – 21.
In a cooperation with Kung fu Sweden.

Instructors:
David Wei – Zi Rong, Otakar Chochola – Zi Pei,
Delegation desciples of 16 generation Wudang San Feng Pai, China

What the participants will gain from this camp:
The focus of this weekend workshop is to share a brief experience of authentic, traditional Wudang internal martial arts. Students of all levels will have an opportunity to build their foundation, learn valuable principles, and develop their practice in the essence that it was passed on to 16th generation daoist disciples Zi Pei and Zi Rong.
The warm ups and stretches shared are derived from the Wudang Yang Shen Gong system, or ‘longevity arts,’ and are based on the three fundamental principles of:

  1. Good circulation – Good health
  2. Long tendons – Long life
  3. Healthy body – Healthy mind.

Moreover, students will rediscover their bodies in a new light and develop the capacity to experience the fine inner workings of their physical being.

The basic exercises shared include both punching and kicking drills. The punching drills are coupled with simple stances and footwork so as to improve coordination, posture, power, and control – essential elements to any martial system. The standard kicking drills are derived from the Wudang 36 Kicks. These kicks have the dynamic capacity to open the hips, develop flexibility, improve circulation, and further cultivate timing, footwork, and coordination.
The Wudang Basic Fist Set, or ‘ji ben gong,’ is the foundation to all martial styles of the Wudang Internal Arts System. Here, students will learn the five basic stances, the six harmonies, and the basic mechanics common to all styles of Wudang Kung Fu. this set will lay the ground work for all future learning.

Beyond the basics, students will also learn the fundamentals of two special Wudang Kung Fu forms: Bagua and Baji. Wudang Bagua Zhang, or ‘eight trigram palm,’ is a beautiful system primarily characterized by its spraling movements and it’s circular footwork pattern. To compliment this learning, students will also learn fundamentals of the Wudang Baji Quan set, or ‘eight extremes fist.’ This style is better known for it’s explosive, linear power, serving as a perfect partner to the circular energy of the Bagua set.

Aside from kung fu, students will also learn basic meditation, both seated and standing. Here, students will learn proper anatomical alignment and posture as well as a number of powerful therapeutic breathing exercises for the purpose of cultivating internal life force, or ‘qi.’
